Chapter Eleven

Carroll didn’t have any objections, and so they left Derek with his research on the McDonalds’ foreign business contacts, and drove to Teresa Hartford’s office.

Jordan had left a message with Nina Torres to get back to her as soon as possible.

Hartford, whose name was connected to hair salons and spas scattered all over the state, had them wait. Jordan had expected nothing less, and she hadn’t made an appointment for a reason. Meanwhile, she and Ellie sat in the posh waiting area, declining the coffee that Hartford’s secretary offered them.

“Clearly, it pays off to be a Madam, huh?”

There was no way the twenty-something secretary could have heard Jordan’s commentary, but she glared into her direction anyway.

“Right, perhaps I should have taken that coffee.”

“I’m sorry. I kept you up.”

“It was for a good reason.”

They shared a smile, and Ellie almost questioned the wisdom of taking Jordan to this interview, after spending a good part of the night cuddling and planning the future, for them and the baby that would be part of their family. She and Jordan had been working together for a few years now, starting when Ellie was still in uniform. Usually, she didn’t get distracted, but today…felt different. They had made it through some difficult times—early on, they sometimes had tiptoed around each other, afraid to cross lines. These days, it was so much easier. They could talk about everything.

“Detectives?” The secretary put her phone on her desk. “Ms. Hartford will see you now.”

“Thank you!” Ellie jumped to her feet, Jordan following her into the spacious office. Spacious was a vast understatement, actually. Whatever it was that generated most of Hartford’s income, it was lucrative.

“Detectives Carpenter and Harding.” Teresa Hartford had clearly paid attention to the information the secretary had given her about her visitors. The woman in her early fifties shook their hands with a polite smile. “Homicide.” She wasn’t smiling anymore, though her tone stayed cordial. “I understand that there have been some misunderstandings with the police about parts of my business before, but I can’t imagine I could help you with a murder investigation.”

“This won’t be long,” Ellie said. “You might have heard about the death at the Capitol Inn?”

“How could I not? It was all over the news.”

“The room next to the victim’s had been rented by your company.”

“Is that so? I’d have to check that to be sure. I don’t do that kind of scheduling, as you can imagine.”

Ellie could. “I was hoping you could look into why the reservation was canceled a day before the incident, and if someone might have been in contact with a Mr. Callum.”

Hartford regarded her with calculation in her gaze.

“Detective…Harding, it is, right? You have a warrant? I’m not running a prostitution ring, as I’ve been accused of before, but this is still sensitive information.”

“We were hoping you could do us a favor,” Jordan, who had remained silent so far, said. “Just so we know there’s no connection between your business, and a murder case.”

“I guess if I swear to you there isn’t, my word isn’t good enough? Give me a moment.
